What is Acid Etching?

Acid etching, which can also be referred to as a ‘Pavilion finish,’ is a specialized process that removes the surface to expose the color and texture beneath. By applying a diluted hydrochloric acid formula, we can effectively etch your concrete to achieve a stunning finish.

Benefits of Acid Etching

  • Aesthetic Appeal: The acid etching process reveals a beautiful, textured finish similar to traditional exposed aggregate driveways.
  • Comfort: Unlike traditional exposed aggregate, our Pavilion finish is comfortable to walk on with bare feet, as the aggregate is either ground flat or only slightly exposed, preventing dirt from getting trapped.
  • Non-Slip Surface: This process naturally produces a non-slip finish, making it ideal for outdoor areas such as driveways, pathways, and alfresco spaces.

The Process

  1. Surface Preparation: Your concreter can pour a custom concrete mix to ensure it is laid to accommodate the acid etch process. Alternatively, subject to the quality of the existing concrete, we can perform the process on your existing surface.
  2. Application: A diluted hydrochloric acid formula is applied to etch the concrete.
  3. Finishing: The aggregate is either ground flat or slightly exposed to achieve the desired texture and appearance.

Specialized and Professional

Acid etching is a specialized process that requires experienced installers and specialized equipment. It can be carried out on both new and old concrete surfaces. However, due to the precise nature of the process and the need for specific standards to be met, it should never be attempted as a DIY project.
