Sometimes, and sometimes not. The honest answer has less to do with the two materials than with what is already sitting under your feet, which is why quotes for polished concrete vary so much across the city. A Melbourne home with a sound slab and nothing to strip back is in a very different position to one where the floor has to be uncovered, patched, and assessed before anyone can quote properly.
That is the part most cost comparisons skip.
Tiling is a fairly predictable trade. You choose a tile, the substrate is levelled, the tile is laid over adhesive, and the joints are grouted. Most of the product arrives finished.
Concrete floor polishing works the other way around. The floor is there already. Polishing, honing, and grinding fine-tune the floor slab that is already there, and therefore your existing concrete slab plays a major part in determining what happens and how much it will cost. The age of your floor, its installation process, how deeply the aggregate is set, and even its condition are factors that play into the pricing.
With polished concrete, the money goes into floor preparation and finish. Lifting old carpet, tile beds, or adhesive takes time. Cracks and divots need patching. A light grind that leaves mostly cement fines showing is a different job than a full aggregate exposure, and the deeper the grind, the more the price moves.
The costs are accumulated when dealing with tiles in terms of materials and labor. Various prices are set for porcelain, ceramic, and natural stone materials, and big tiles need a flat base beneath them and will need more screeding. The process of grouting, cutting, waterproofing, and working in a difficult area takes time.
Neither floor is cheap when preparation is heavy, and both work out better across large, open areas than across small, cut-up ones.
Polished concrete floors carry no topical coating to wear off, so they ask for little beyond regular cleaning. Tiles are hardworking too, though the grout lines are the weak point. They stain, they need scrubbing, and eventually they need attention. Tiles do hold one advantage here: a damaged tile can be lifted and replaced, which concrete cannot offer.
For most households, that trade-off shapes the real cost more than the initial quote does.
If you are building or extending, polished concrete floors are usually the stronger buy. The slab is going in regardless, so the finish comes out of work you were already paying for, and agreeing the mix with your concreter before the pour gives you the result you actually want.
Tiles make better sense in several common Melbourne situations. Upper levels of double-storey homes and townhouses are typically timber framed, with no slab to polish. Bathrooms and laundries need waterproofing and falls to drains that tile handles neatly. And if an older slab turns out to be weathered or poorly poured, polishing may not be on the table at all.
There is a middle path worth knowing about. A decorative overlay can be applied over concrete or existing tiles and gives a similar look without a new slab. The phrase “polished concrete tiles” usually points to concrete-look porcelain rather than a polished slab, and that is a fair option too where the substrate rules polishing out.
