Two slabs poured on the same Melbourne street can look nothing alike, because concrete finishes are decided by how deep the slab is ground and how much light the surface reflects. Polished concrete floor finishes come down to two choices made together: stone exposure and sheen. This guide covers what changes the look and how to match a finish to your space.
The cream cement covering the sand and stones lies over the slab. The cut that will be done by the grinding machine passes through that cream. The cut’s depth determines the quantity of aggregate exposed. Industry exposure classes describe three outcomes:
The slab sets the limits. With a cream finish, very little material is removed; thus, the tool marks, colour differences, and imperfections on the original pour will be visible. With deeper grinding, such marks are taken away, but some voids may come up. Flatness at the pour also affects how evenly stone reads across a large floor.
Sheen is an independent issue from stone exposure, and this is where most folks run into trouble. Polished concrete flooring comes with a variety of finishes that can be used in combination with any stone exposure to result in a glossy, satin or matte finish.
Matte reflects the least light. It looks calm and natural and forgives dust, footprints and scratches. Satin gives a soft glow and moderate reflection, and it is the middle ground many Melbourne homeowners settle on. Gloss and high gloss return the most light, brighten a dim room and sharpen exposed stone, though every mark shows sooner.
Room light matters too. Living spaces that face south with little sunshine during the winter benefit from more shine, whereas north-facing rooms with a lot of glass windows become too reflective with a gloss finish.
Start with use. Consider the use of the room first. For warehouses and workshops, you should consider how long your surfaces will last and be easy to clean, not how they look.
Traffic also changes how polished concrete floor finishes age. A busy cafe entry dulls a high-gloss surface faster than a spare bedroom, which is why many hospitality operators settle on a mid-sheen.
Budget connects directly to exposure. With greater stone exposure comes more grinding cycles and increased wearing down of diamonds and labour; therefore, a fully exposed floor is usually more expensive on a square metre basis than a cream finish. Be honest about maintenance. Every polished floor needs regular dust mopping and a neutral cleaner, and a gloss surface in a busy household asks for it more often. Check the care and maintenance guidance before committing.
Not all concrete finishes with a polished appearance are polished concrete. Mechanical polishing grinds, hones and polishes the slab itself with progressively finer diamond tooling and a chemical densifier. No topical coating sits on top, so the floor resists wear well and does not need resealing.
A decorative overlay is a cementitious coating applied over an existing surface. It can go over concrete, tiles or timber with AC sheeting, which makes it the practical route when a slab cannot be polished. Overlays may need occasional resealing.
A grind and seal uses a lighter grind followed by a topical sealer. It costs less and suits a rustic warehouse look. Urban Concrete Floors does not recommend it for residential projects.
Age, mix design, pour quality, flatness, moisture and any previous floor covering all affect which polished concrete floor finishes are realistic. An assessment establishes what the existing concrete can deliver before anything is promised.
For new builds, the decision belongs earlier than most people expect. Aggregated exposure depends on the mixture and the pouring; therefore, determine the finish before the slab is poured.
Mechanically polished floors have a finish that is matte or satin and thus easier to maintain. This is because low shine makes it harder for dust or scratches to show. Gloss looks sharper but shows marks sooner.
Sometimes. It depends on the mix design, the depth of usable material and what sits below the surface. Deeper grinding can reveal pits, voids or uneven stone, so assess the slab before confirming an exposure level.
Absolutely not!’ Grind and seal’ means grinding and putting on a coating. Polished concrete involves mechanically grinding and polishing the surface without any coatings on top of it. The difference lies in the process, as well as in maintenance and durability.
